The Practice of Praise
By EXW Staff - Book Reviews - Oct 22, 2009
The body of Christ is experiencing another "reformation" - a reformation of worship - and it could be just as significant as Luther's campaign. But as churches negotiate the reformation, important questions arise: What is the difference between a "traditional" worship service and a "praise and worship" style service? How can my church negotiate a smooth transition to a new worship style? How can I lead my church into deeper dimensions of worship? The Practice of Praise addresses these and other issues in a biblical and practical way. It serves as a how-to manual fo...read more

A Heart of Worship
By EXW Staff - Book Reviews - Oct 01, 2009
Lamar Boschman is a wonderful worship leader and writer on the topic of worship. This book is a well balanced piece that will help you in your growth and understanding of worship. In our opinion, this is Lamar's best book on the subject. It is well worth the time and money to purchase and read. Chapters include: Being a Worshiper, The Living Heart of Faith, Called to Worship, Worship Doesn't End with the Song Service along with several chapters on the history of worship in the church and trends in worship. A great book for someone who is hungry to learn about true...read more

Principle Centered Leadership
By EXW Staff - Book Reviews - Sep 27, 2009
This book may not be a "How to do Worship" book but it is one worth reading. Stephen Covey has been a recognized name in the business world for years. If you have read and enjoyed "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People", you will enjoy this book. He has some great principles and tips for people in leadership positions. The philosophies of leadership carry over to any area of leadership. The church is a odd bird in regards to how it operates and is led. We work with volunteers for the most part. The act of leading them tends to be a bit more delicate than in th...read more

The Dynamics of Corporate Worship
By EXW Staff - Book Reviews - July 24, 2009
Worship wars rage. Wounded worshipers are left scattered along the highway of biblical worship. Issues over worship preferences, traditions, music styles, cultural identity, and more are invitations to controversy. How can church leaders today guide their congregations into effective worship with so many differences of opinion? The purpose of this book-the sixth in the Ministry Dynamics for a New Century series-is to redirect the debate to the core issue: a biblical understanding of what corporate worship really is. In three sections, the author examines eleme...read more

The Kiss of Heaven
By EXW Staff - Book Reviews - June 18, 2009
Darlene Zschech describes The Kiss of Heaven as the sense of heaven touching earth, as if God himself kisses her on the head. Her first experience of this was when she held her long-awaited newborn daughter. She has felt His kiss as He has used her song “Shout to the Lord” to inspire worship around the world. In The Kiss of Heaven, you’ll discover how you can experience God’s favor as you seek His blessing and pursue the dream He has planted in your heart. Darlene says, “God is watching for someone to kiss with His favor at this very moment. He watches—hoping to ...read more

Contemporary Worship Music
By EXW Staff - Book Reviews - June 05, 2009
A book worth reading for any worship leader or music minister. For that matter anyone on a church staff, anyone who calls themselves a worshiper, anyone who struggles with contemporary worship music and pretty much anyone who is a believer. Dr. Frame is a 50 year old seminary professor with a Ph.D in theology from Princeton University. Some might think he would would lean to the more classical and traditional side of music in worship but he does not. He takes scripture to defend his position and has stepped on a lot of toes with his findings. There is a lot of ...read more

The Ragamuffin Gospel
By EXW Staff - Book Reviews - Feb 25, 2009
For several years now I have had this book on my shelf. I bought it a while back at the urging of a friend who loved the book. Needless to say it is now three years later and I finally made time to read it. If you haven't read "The Ragamuffin Gospel", you are missing out on truly understanding and living in God's grace. Brennan Manning brings to truth and to life what it means to live the Christian life. It's a life filled with unconditional love and acceptance. You cannot do anything more to make or cause God to love you more than He already does. I coul...read more

Living Worship
By EXW Staff - Book Reviews - May 03, 2008
We have a tendency to limit our Christian experiences by “boxing” them in a confined space. We label our spiritual boxes, both large and small, and place our boxed experiences neatly on the shelf of our minds…. along with other boxes we’ve collected over the years. It all makes for a tidy intellect, an organized life, manageable encounters with God and man. There’s only one problem with all this. Spirituality and all of life is organic. When the Spirit of God breathes life on something, it grows. Sometimes, life oozes out of our tidy little boxes, drips down the ...read more
